Nasolabial cyst excision

Introduction: Nasolabial cyst is a rare non odontogenic tumor arising from maxillo facial soft tissues. This condition was first described by Zuckerkandl in 1882.

Clinical details:

52 years old female patient presented with swelling in the left side of nose and face of 6 years duration. There was assocaited mild nasal block and pain on the left side. Patient gave no history of bleeding from nose.

On examination there was swelling seen just lateral to the ala of the nasal cavity on the left side. The same swelling could be palpated through the bucco gingival sulcus, and was cystic in nature. Intranasal examination showed that the inferior turbinate being pushed by the mass medially.

Surgical procedure:

Surgical removal of the cyst was performed under local anesthesia.

The patient was first sedated using 1 cc fortwin and 1 cc phenergan injections. Iv line was started. A gauze piece dipped in 4 % xylocaine was placed under the bucco gingival sulcus on the left side. This is to ensure topical anesthesia.

About 2 ml of 2% xylocaine with 1 in 1 lakh units adrenaline is used to infiltrate the buccogingival sulcus on the left side. This is to provide local anesthesia.

A 15 blade knife is used to incise the mucosa of buccogingival sulcus on the left side. Dense cyst cavity is seen rupturing and extruding straw colored fluid.

The cyst wall is identified, and removed in toto. The wound was closed with 3 - 0 chromic catgut.
